Advice on Parenting Through Separation

Girlings is pleased to offer a ‘Parenting Through Separation Guide’, produced by the family justice organisation Resolution, to help parents navigate through what can often be a difficult and daunting time. The free guide is available to any parent seeking help during their separation.

The guide contains advice about how to co-parent with a former partner, background on the common disputes that arise between separating parents, and how to talk to children about the painful topic of divorce or separation.

Download your free guide here: Parenting Through Separation

Part of the guide looks at how children may react to separation and how to help your children based on their ages, and provides the following top tips for discussing divorce with your children:

  • If your situation allows, try to have a joint conversation when all of your children are present. Keep this age appropriate.
  • Plan a series of conversations, including different follow up conversations, if your children are different ages. Be mindful that their reactions will depend on their age, developmental stage and their individual personality.
  • Reassure your children that it is okay to feel sad or scared and showing emotion is good. They can always talk to either of you and ask questions.
  • Remember you are a role model and your children are watching how you manage this situation. If they see that you are still their parents, making decisions together about them, then they will cope better.

Fixed Fee Initial Interviews

If you would like further advice in respect of your separation and arrangements for your children, then Girlings offer fixed fee initial interviews.

As a team, we cannot emphasise enough the value of receiving early professional advice when considering matters concerning your children. To encourage our clients to seek early advice, we always offer a one hour fixed fee initial interview with an experienced family law specialist at a discount of at least 40%. This fee also includes follow up written advice after the meeting.

Our experience has shown that our clients often need much longer than 30 minutes for that first initial advice from a family solicitor so clients can consider their options going forward.
