Girlings Solicitors and Girlings Personal Injury Claims are celebrating the #First100 years of the first equal opportunities legislation to enter the statute book, which has particular significance for the legal sector.
The Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919
On 23 December 1919 The Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act enabled women to enter the legal profession and the civil service and to become jurors for the very first time.
The Sex Disqualification (Removal Act) also enabled women to enter other professions, such as chatered accountancy, veterinary medicine and the higher ranks of parts of the civil service. It allowed universities to award women degrees, and Oxford did just this the following year, although Cambridge did not follow suit until 1948. All these were momentous improvements which widened employment opportunities for many women.
Countdown to 23 December 2019
In the countdown to this important centenary Girlings will be celebrating the achievements of some remarkable women in the legal sector as well as looking back at our own history to see how things have changed. Take a look at the First100 years project’s timeline which charts the journey of women in Law since 1919.
Although opportunities in the Legal Industry have advanced, the sector as a whole still needs to work harder to support the advancement of talented women. At Girlings we are proud to have an equal balance of men and women on the Management Board, and as a Firm are committed to supporting equal opportunity.
