A message from Dementia Friend Champion - Charlotte Parsons
Girlings has joined the ‘Dementia Friendly’ campaign and I am in the process of running a series of information sessions for staff at our offices in Ashford, Canterbury, Herne Bay to encourage people to become Dementia Friends and spread the word.
Dementia Friends is about learning more about Dementia and the small ways you can help. From telling friends about the Dementia Friends programme to visiting someone you know living with dementia, every action counts.
I signed up as a Dementia Friend Champion because it is a subject very close to my heart and I feel very passionately about raising awareness. I attended a training course, receive ongoing support and I am now proud to be a part of a growing network of people creating dementia friendly communities together.
Dementia can affect people of all ages not just the elderly. Alzheimer’s Society research shows that there are currently 850,000 people living with the condition in England, more than half have Alzheimer’s disease. In less than ten years a million people will be living with dementia. This will soar to 1.7 million people by 2051.
Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It is part of Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friendly Communities programme focusing on improving inclusion and quality of life for people with dementia. It also aims to transform the way the nation thinks, talks and acts about the condition.
Over one million people have become Dementia Friends in the UK. As part of Alzheimer’s Society’s long-term commitment to help more communities and businesses become dementia-friendly, a new target of creating four million Dementia Friends by 2020 has been set.
You can find out more about Alzheimer’s Society through their website www.alzheimers.org.uk.
The session takes between 45-60 minutes. Please contact me, Charlotte Parsons, Paralegal in Girlings Private Client team, if you would like to attend a session and become a Dementa Friend. I look forward to hearing from you.
