Our Canterbury office

Our history began in 1881, when the solicitor Walter Hills set up an office in Margate, operating as a sole practitioner. Our first Canterbury office opened in 1906 in Dane John Gardens, and today the Girlings Solicitors head office is located in the heart of the city at 16 Rose Lane.

For more than a century we have worked to build our reputation as one of the leading solicitors in Canterbury. Over the years, we’ve worked from a number of locations throughout the historic Cathedral city, from our original office on the High Street to other premises which include Upper Bridge Street, St Margaret Street, Watling Street and Dane John Gardens.

Since 2003, we have been based at our current office in the heart of the city centre, close to the bus and train stations and car parking.

We also offer legal services to customers located in the wider Canterbury area including villages such as Chartham, Blean, Tyler Hill, Broad Oak and Sturry (as well as Hales Place, Fordwich, Rough Common, Bridge, and Bekesbourne).

Our role in the Canterbury community

At Girlings Solicitors, we have made a long-term commitment to serving our local community. From supporting local charities with legal advice and fundraising to sponsorship and educational talks, we see it as our responsibility to be an active and valuable part of the local community.

Girlings is proud to be involved with numerous activities and causes in the Canterbury area. Our corporate charity is Take Off, a local mental health organisation providing social support in the form of self-help groups and other activities.

We provide volunteers for the Law Clinic at the University of Kent, which offers a free public service for local citizens who cannot afford essential legal advice and representation - as well as contributing to the education of students at Kent Law School though direct legal practice.

Girlings Solicitors are also sponsors of the Kent County Cricket Club, Canterbury Pride and the Canterbury Wine Festival, among many other local events in the city and the surrounding area.

Girlings Solicitors is authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority No. 614527. Authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Girlings Personal Injury Claims Ltd is a separate company authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority No. 522082.
