We welcome enquiries from prospective trainees who are looking to further their careers within a firm with a reputation for excellence.

Opportunities for Trainee Solicitors

Each year between January and July we recruit one trainee to commence a training contract the following September.

Why train with Girlings?

• because we are committed to providing a high quality, structured training programme supervised by experts;
• because we consider trainees a valuable asset and give them responsibility and  exposure to clients from an
  early stage;
• because the Firm’s Training Partner and Human Resources Manager oversee the training programme to
  ensure trainees gain a wide range of experience   and so develop their professional skills;
• because the programme is divided into four six month seats, tailored where possible to accommodate the
   trainee’s preferred practice areas:
• Company Commercial
• Commercial & Residential Property
• Employment
• Personal injury
• Family
• Private Client

• because the programme is varied with time spent in several of our five offices in East Kent including
  Canterbury, Ashford, Herne Bay and Margate.

Unfortunately we do not offer sponsorship for the Legal Practice Course.

Application Criteria
A 2:1 degree is essential (preferably in Law).  Academic ability is important, however the Firm also looks for intelligence, drive and enthusiasm, initiative with common sense and strong inter-personal skills.  We welcome applications from graduates of all ages; cultural and ethnic diversities.
We consider trainees our investment for the future and aim to retain as many as possible as Assistant Solicitors post qualification.  Applications from those with a strong affinity to Kent or wishing to lay down roots in Kent are particularly welcome.

If you are looking to further your career with a firm with a reputation for excellence, complete the Training Application Form and send it together with a covering letter or supporting statement.  It’s not all about work, so we would also like to hear about any extra curricular activities you have taken part in or interests you may have.

Application Process
If you are shortlisted for interview you will be invited to meet the Training Partner and Human Resources Manager for an initial interview.  If you are then selected for second interview you will meet two senior partners, an Associate Solicitor who trained with the Firm and the Human Resources Manager once again. You will also be required to give a short presentation and complete an assessment exercise.  In certain circumstances we may also offer you a one week period of unpaid work experience so that you can sample the culture and environment should you join the Firm.
